Ad Character Limits & Preview Guide

Ad Character Limits & Preview Guide

Use this guide to check common ad text limits, preview where copy may be cut off, and prepare cleaner ad variations before launch.

1. Google Ads Character Limits

Google Responsive Search Ads enforce a strict 30-character limit for headlines and a 90-character limit for descriptions. Display paths allow 15 characters each.

2. Google Search Ads Headlines & Descriptions

For better variation, many advertisers use 8 to 10 unique headlines and 3 to 4 distinct descriptions, even though Google requires fewer, to give Google more useful combinations to test.

3. Google Display Ads Text Limits

Responsive Display Ads require short headlines (30 chars), one long headline (90 chars), descriptions (90 chars), and a business name (25 chars).

4. Meta Ad Character Limits

Meta allows longer text in many fields, but visible copy varies by placement and device. In many feed placements, longer primary text may be hidden behind "See more," so keep the main offer near the beginning.

5. Facebook Feed Ad Copy Tips

Put your primary hook in the first 80 characters of primary text before the truncation break. Use clear benefits and strong calls to action.

6. Instagram Feed Ad Copy Tips

Instagram users browse visually. Keep text overlays short and ensure the first line of your caption delivers the core offer immediately.

7. Stories and Reels Ad Copy Tips

For vertical 9:16 placements, keep key text, logos, and offers away from the top and bottom UI areas. Stories and Reels controls can cover different parts of the frame, so leave extra room near the bottom and test the preview before launch. Common template guidance: keep roughly the top 14% clear, leave at least the bottom 20% clear for Stories, and leave extra bottom space for Reels.

8. What Gets Cut Off in Ads?

On smaller screen sizes, Google Ads and Meta Ads automatically truncate headlines longer than 27–30 characters and secondary descriptions. Always put critical offers first.
